This is such a simple, but profoundly sound concept.
Someone with a great skill set but not a positive attitude on the bus will cause other good staff to get off.
I had an example in the last week where a client was looking for a new member of staff for a specific role. He set his expectations to wait until finding someone who would contribute to a ‘wholesome environment’. And could align with the 3 core values of this business – Connection, Meaningful Work, and a Wholesome Workplace.
Amongst several applications, the professionalism and presentation of one CV stood out, but not the required skill set.
The applicant was interviewed and immediately given the job – my client was convinced they will positively contribute to the working environment, and any skill required could be picked up fairly quickly.
Once you have your business values clear they’re a great reference point for any decision making in the business.
If you don’t have these values as a clear guide to create the business culture, you could end up with a potentially toxic culture by default.
