When we leave home we lose the accountability to our parents and teachers, and if we go into employment it is replaced by accountability to a boss, or manager.
But if we go self-employed there is no accountability. Only to ourselves, and we are not always the best person to hold hold ourselves accountable for doing what’s most important.
If you’re really disciplined, you can get yourself clear on your values, where you are ultimately headed, and the routines, habits, and structures to stick to for your desired outcomes.
And you can report in at the same time and day weekly to a lamp post – ‘this is my priority, where I’m going, what I did last week and what I’m promising to do this week’.
That’s unusual.
I’m pretty disciplined and focused, and I have two other coaches that I report into on a Monday and Friday. And unlike a lamp post, they will smell anything fishy, what I’m hiding or trying to get away with.
Don’t try and do this yourself. It’s far more effective to have an accountability buddy – a partner or a coach – and more enjoyable than talking to a lamp post.
